药物毒理学是根据药物的理化特性, 运用毒理学的原理和方法, 对药物进行全面系统的安全性评价并阐明其毒性作用机制, 以便降低药物对人类健康危害程度的一门科学；其主要目的在于指导临床合理用药, 降低药物不良反应及减少因药物毒性导致的新药开发失败。在现代医学中许多药物的研究与研发都是基于药物毒理学展开的。最普通的例子就是对于蛇毒的应用以及对于吗啡的应用。
下一步可能的工作：一旦该药物的正式的临床前毒理学试验完成，最快在2009年，开始针对MPD患者进行临床试验。
