药物作用是指药物与机体相互作用产生的反应，即药物接触或进入机体后，促进体表与内部环境的生理生化功能改变，或抑制入侵的病原体，协助机体提高抗病能力，达到防治疾病的效果称为药物的作用。 同时药物亦受到机体的影响而发生变化。药物在体内的变化过程称为药物的代谢。因此，药物作用和药物代谢是药物与机体相互作用表现的两个方面。在体内，药物的作用变现逐渐加强，随后逐渐减弱以至消失，也就是机体对药物的影响表现各种变化，以至失去药物原有的作用并排出体外。
