船尾座是古南船座的一部分，1877年，古南船座被分为4个独立的星座，是一个中等亮度的大星座。船尾座拉丁语名为Puppis，赤经为6时02分至8时 26分，赤纬为-11°至51°。船尾座位于大犬座天狼星和船底座老人星两颗星连线的东侧，大部分处在银河中，其中有亮于6等的恒星181颗，包括1颗二等星，6颗三等星，14颗四等星。每年3月13日晚8时船尾座上中天。观测者在北纬39°以南地区可看到完整的船尾座，北纬79°以北的地方则完全看不到这个星座。
