自我调节学习是指学习者为了保证学习的成功、提高学习效果、达到学习目标，主动地运用与调控元认知、动机与行为的过程。它强调学习者能够积极激励自己拥有与调用适当的学习策略进行学习。例如，大家都有这样的经验：不管别人怎么评价，都很清楚自己出色地完成了某项工作，并感到欣慰。同样，当大家的表现不尽如人意时，自己也很清楚。要作出这些判断，自己得有一个学习目标并需要对自己的行为表现有所预期和监控。
自我调节学习（self-regulated learning）是学习者使用一定的认知策略不断监控和调整自己的学习活动的过程。
