腹膜后肿瘤主要包括原发于腹膜后潜在腔隙的原发性腹膜后肿瘤，以及由其他部位转移来的继发性腹膜后肿瘤。临床上常说的腹膜后肿瘤通常情况下仅指原发性腹膜后肿瘤，其多数属于软组织肿瘤，占后者的15%。原发性腹膜后肿瘤临床上较为少见，占恶性肿瘤不及1%。腹膜后肿瘤中恶性肿瘤占80%，最常见为间叶组织来源的肉瘤，占42%。根据美国国立卫生研究院（The National Institutes of Health，NIH）SEER数据库的统计资料计算，我国每年腹膜后肉瘤新发病例应在10000人左右。
