胚胎移植属于是将良种雌性动物配种后的早期胚胎，或者通过体外受精及其他方式得到的胚胎，移植到同种的、生理状态相同的其他雌性动物体内，使之继续发育成为新个体，所以也称作借腹怀胎。其中，提供胚胎的个体为“供体”（donor），接受胚胎的个体为“受体”(recipient)。胚胎移植实际上是产生胚胎的供体和孕育胚胎的受体分工合作共同繁育后代的过程。
