胆管系统肿瘤包括胆囊和胆管(左、右肝管至胆总管下段的肝外胆管)肿瘤,有良、恶性之分，恶性肿瘤中以癌占多数。原发性胆管癌较少见，占普通尸检的0.01%～0.46%，肿瘤病人尸检的2%，胆道手术的0.3%～1.8%。在欧美胆囊癌为胆管癌的1.5～5倍，日本的资料则胆管癌多于胆囊癌。男女之比约为1.5～3.0。发病年龄多为50～70岁，但也可见于年轻人。诊断由于多数胆管系统肿瘤在早期症状较为隐蔽,临床表现缺乏特异性,故早期诊断困难，易漏诊，待确诊时肿瘤多已属晚期。
