肾母细胞瘤是一种胚胎性恶性肿瘤。1814年Rance首先报告此病，1899年Wilms对此病做了详细病理描述，因此，又被命名为Wilms瘤。2004年WHO《泌尿系统及男性生殖器官肿瘤病理学和遗传学》肾肿瘤分类中认为该病起源于肾胚基细胞。
