维氏硬度试验方法是英国史密斯（R.L.Smith）和塞德兰德（G.E.Sandland）于1921年提出的。英国的维克斯—阿姆斯特朗（Vickers-Armstrong）公司试制了第一台以此方法进行试验的硬度计。维氏硬度计是光机电一体化的高新技术产品，该机器造型新颖，具有良好的可靠性、可操作性和直观性，是采用精密机械技术和光电技术的新型维氏和努普硬度测试仪器。
