精原干细胞虽然不能和卵细胞授精，但它们会产生能够发育成精子的细胞。到了青春期，人的睾丸受脑垂体促性腺激素的刺激，精原干细胞开始启动，精原细胞不断增殖发育，演变成精子。精子的发生首先是未分化精原细胞再生，精原细胞的分裂增殖。精原细胞经过数次有丝分裂后，一部分成长为初级精母细胞，另一部分仍作为干细胞。初级精母细胞第一次成熟分裂，形成两个次级精母细胞，进行第二次成熟分裂，形成两个精子细胞。
