筋膜室综合征是指在一密闭间室内，由于压力升高影响血液循环，而造成间室内肌肉、神经等组织不可逆的损害。该病的临床认识归功于Richard von Volkmann的工作。1881年他在发表的文章中将前臂发生的不可逆的手部屈肌挛缩解释为缺血性损伤。他认为，广泛的静脉血液瘀滞同时伴有动脉供血不足是发生屈肌挛缩的病理生理基础，而绷带包扎过紧可引起上述病理过程，这已在临床上得到证实。
