空气泡沫是一种能够与水混合，通过机械方法产生的泡沫，常用于机械泡沫灭火剂。它分为低倍数、中倍数、高倍数三种。低倍数泡沫灭火剂的发泡倍数在20倍以下，中倍数泡沫灭火剂的发泡倍数在20～500之间。高倍数泡沫灭火剂的发泡倍数在500～1000倍之间。其中低倍数泡沫灭火剂又分为蛋白泡沫、氟蛋白泡沫、水成膜泡沫（又称轻水泡沫或氟化学泡沫）、合成泡沫和抗溶性泡沫灭火剂等几种类型。
