种质资源库利用仪器设备控制贮藏环境，长期贮存作物种质的仓库。又称基因库。发掘和收集各种农作物品种种子，科学地加以贮藏，使种质在几十年、甚至数百年之后仍具有原有的遗传特性和很高的发芽力，对于品种改良，培育高产、优质、抗逆性强的新品种，并为生物学的理论研究提供丰富的种质和研究材料具有重要意义（见作物种质资源）。
除了植物种子，种质资源库还保存了总DNA以及微生物等样本。
