硬件图形加速是为了加快视频显示的速度。使用图形加速器不仅能加快视频显示的速度,而且使CPU能分出更多的时间去执行其他任务。对现代软件,像图形界面和多媒体这样的应用程序使用图形加速器是必须的。 硬件图形加速器就是用固化的硬件去实现图形加速器。当然也有软件图形加速器。
直到Vista为止，应用程序使用GDI在屏幕上进行绘图，同时GDI使用硬件图形加速器来完成实际的工作。
Until Vista, an application would, for example, use the GDI to draw a picture on the screen while GDI would use the hardware graphics accelerator to do the actual job.
