短串联重复序列（short tandem repeats，STR）： 又称为微卫星DNA，重复单位为2-6bp，重复次数10~60多次，基因片段，400bp以下。产生主要是DNA复制过程中滑动，或复制和修复时滑动链与互补链碱基错配，导致一个或几个重复单位的缺失或插入。目前为主要的技术手段。STR遗传符合孟得尔遗传定律。在染色体上，存在一些串联重复序列，但重复的次数可以出现个体差异，形成片段长度等位基因，如果串联重复序列的重复单位仅2-6bp，等位基因片段比较短，就可以称为短串联重复序列。
