矩震级是利用地震矩的大小确定震级。地震矩是一个描述地震发生时的力学强度的物理量(类似于力矩的概念)，它由地震断层的破裂面积、平均错动量及岩石的剪切模量的乘积来确定。地震矩及矩震级可通过地震波谱的综合反演求得，或通过地震的破裂特征(地震断层规模、震源深度、错动量及岩石力学性质等) 求得。
震级是表示地震本身大小的量度指标，目前比较常用的是里氏震级（Richter magnitude scale）和矩震级（Moment magnitu震级参见：里氏地震规模 地震强度大小的一种度量，根据地震释放能量多少来划分。
