生物潜能 （biologic potential ）：Chapman 1928年建议用生物潜能表示种群的最大生殖能力，也就是种群在无限制的环境中(其中的空间、食物和其他有机体等均没有限制性影响)，具有最有利的稳定的年龄分布，并在某一特定的温度、湿度、光照和食物性质的条件下，所达到的最大瞬时增长率。参数r是描述生物潜能的最合适的量度。由于环境的抑制作用，在自然界中，生物潜能永远也不能完全表现出来。只有在实验室条件下，才能达到物种的生物潜能。
