生态承载力是指在某一特定环境条件下（主要指生存空间、营养物质、阳光等生态因子的组合），某种个体存在数量的最高极限。生态承载力的提出对于承载力理论的研究是一个很大的进步，和单因素承载力相比，生态承载力更多地关注生态系统的整合性、持续性和协调性，生态承载力的提出为实现由单纯支撑人类的社会进步变成促进整个生态系统和谐发展的进步奠定了基础。
