甘草具有抗炎、抗变态反应的作用，这主要来自于甘草酸铱--甘草酸及甘草次酸盐，还能抑制毛细血管通透性。肾上腺皮质激素样作用，甘草具有盐皮质甾醇样作用和糖皮质类甾醇样作用。其激素样作用的原理，有人认为是甘草次酸的化学结构与肾上腺皮质激素有相似之点，是一种直接作用，但也有人认为是间接作用，即甘草次酸抑制了肾上腺皮质甾醇类在体内的破坏，因而血中含量相应增加。同时，甘草黄酮还有抑制酪氨酸酶活性、清除氧目由基，其抗氧化能力与维生素E比较接近。
