现代体育，一般是相对古代体育、近代体育而言的。但有的学者将近代体育直接划归现代体育，理由是中文的“近代”和“现代”在英文里都同样译为modern，并且认为更重要的是在鸦片战争以后，中国社会和中国体育也已经开始了它们艰难的现代化之路。因此，也可以说现代体育是相对古代体育而言的。
