【现代中国小说】即在“五四”文化革命运动中诞生和发展起来的白话文写作的新体小说，包括从“五四”至今的中国白话小说。这些小说根植于现代中国现实生活的深厚土壤，又取法和借鉴了欧洲近代小说的许多特点，既不同于中国历代的文言小说，也迥异于传统的古代白话小说。现代中国小说创作经历了“五四”时期、抗战时期、延安时期、建国初期、新时期等重要阶段。
在此之前，1970年英国学者詹纳（W.J.F.Jenner）在牛津大学出版社推出了名为《现代中国小说》（Modern Chinese Stories）的选本，其中收录了鲁迅的三篇小说：《孔乙己》、《故乡》、《祝福》。
