爆轰波是指以超声速运动的激波，称为冲击波，带有化学反应的冲击波。炸药一旦起爆，首先在起爆点发生爆炸反应而产生大量高温、高压和高速的气流，在炸药中激发冲击波。冲击波强烈压缩邻近的炸药薄层引起炸药反应，产生大量气体与大量热。反应所释放出来的热量的一部分足以补偿冲击波传播时的能量损耗，因此，冲击波得以维持固有波速和波阵面压力继续向前传播。其后紧接着引起炸药进行化学反应，并以同等速度向前传播。这种伴随有化学反应，在炸药中传播的特殊形式的冲击波称为爆轰波，这个过程叫做爆轰过程。
