煤炭自燃（Spontaneous combustion of coal），简称煤自燃，是一个复杂的物理化学过程。煤炭自燃是自然界存在的一种客观现象，已经存在了数百万年，它是矿井火灾控制管理中的一个重要方面。从化学中可知，自燃是物质在空气中发生氧化作用而自动发生燃烧的现象，而燃烧则是物质剧烈氧化而发光、发热的一种化学现象，由此可知，煤炭自燃是煤长期与空气中的氧接触，发生物理、化学作用的结果。 它是一个自加速的氧化放热反应，氧分子首先在煤表面形成物理、化学吸附热，使煤体温度缓慢上升，而温度的升高促使氧分子克服势阻与煤分子表面活性官能团发生深度氧化分解反应，生成小分子气体，并释放大量反应热，这些热量在煤体内部积聚起来，最终导致了煤炭的自燃。
