热式流量计采用热扩散原理，热扩散技术是一种在苛刻条件下性能优良、可靠性高的技术。热式流量计有两个温度传感器被置于介质中时，其中一个传感器被加热到环境温度以上的的温度，另一个温度传感器用于感应介质温度。介质流速增加，介质带走的热量增多，两个温度传感器的温度差将随介质的流速变化而变化，根据温度差与介质流速的比例关系，可得出流体的流量Q。热式流量计绝大部分用于测量气体，只有少量热式流量计用于测量微小液体流量。
