汽车号牌，是国家车辆管理法规规定的具有统一格式、统一式样，由车辆管理机关经过申领牌照的汽车进行审核、检验、登记后，核发的带有注册登记编码的硬质号码牌。 汽车牌照是汽车号牌与汽车行车执照的简称。1972年发布的《城市和公路交通管理规则（试行）》，把行车执照改称行驶证。一般为两面，分别按规定安装在汽车前后部指定位置上。汽车号牌是准许汽车上道行驶的法定凭证，是道路交通管理部门、社会治安管理部门及广大人民群众监督汽车行驶情况，识别、记忆与查找的凭证。 行驶证是车辆管理机关核发的，记载车辆初次登记的主要内容，由车主保存，随车携带，供记载变动情况及随时查验的统一格式的登记册。按照《道路交通管理条例》规定，汽车号牌与行驶证是准予汽车上道路行驶的法定证件。
