水泵水轮机是20世纪30年代出现的新型抽水蓄能机组，与水轮机和水泵串联的蓄能机组相比，其重量大为减轻，造价降低，因而得到广泛应用。水泵水轮机主要分为混流式、斜流式和贯流式，适用水头/扬程的范围不同。混流式和斜流式水泵水轮机主要应用于大中型抽水蓄能电站，其中使用最为广泛的是混流式水泵水轮机。贯流式则多应用于潮汐电站。此外，在一些装有轴流泵的泵站，亦有利用轴流式水泵反转进行发电的，这种轴流式水泵水轮机应用并不广泛。
