正压不稳定（barotropic instability）是满足正压性假设的地球流体由速度的纬向分布不均所带来的不稳定，是波动不稳定的一种。 正压不稳定可以由旋转流体的Rayleigh问题导出，其理论判据是绝对涡度的纬向导数需等于0，即流场存在绝对涡度的极值。在观念上，正压不稳定可以将平均流场的动能转化为不稳定能量并以波动形式释放，所得到的不稳定波为罗斯贝波。在大气科学领域，正压不稳定被用于解释低纬度地区天气尺度扰动的生成和发展。
