本草考证（Research on Materia Medica ）用考古方法，对中药名称、产地、真伪、性味功用等方面的考证。 本草考证之所以称之为考证，不是简单地堆砌资料，而是要从生产实际中发现问题，从古代本草资料中缕清其发展脉络，寻求其历史原因，并提出去伪存真的正确合理见解，这才算是真正的研究。否则，就会使人看轻了本草考证的意义和作用。
