有效应力原理（principle of effective stress） 这是土力学区别于其他力学的一个重要原理。土是三相体系，对饱和土来说，是二相体系。外荷载作用后，土中应力被土骨架和土中的水气共同承担，但是只有通过土颗粒传递的有效应力才会使土产生变形，具有抗剪强度。而通过孔隙中的水气传递的孔隙压力对土的强度和变形没有贡献。这可以通过一个试验理解：比如有两土试样，一个加水超过土表面若干，会发现土样没有压缩；另一个表面放重物，很明显土样被压缩了。尽管这两个试样表面都有荷载，但是结果不同。原因就是前一个是孔隙水压，后一个是通过颗粒传递的，为有效应力。就是饱和土的压缩有个排水过程(孔隙水压力消散的过程),只有排完水土才压缩稳定.再者在外荷载作用下，土中应力被土骨架和土中的水气共同承担,水是没有摩擦力的,只有土粒间的压力(有效应力)产生摩擦力(摩擦力是土抗剪强度的一部分)。
