斜层理指在沉积岩的岩层内出现的同岩层水平层面相斜交的层理。它是由许多同向倾斜的，并以各种小于休止角的角度中凹的细层（薄于1厘米）重叠组成。这是由于沉积物在流动的水或大气介质中向同一方向运动、堆积的结果。斜层理的倾斜方向指示水流或气流的方向。它常发育在水、气流沉积物中，如三角洲、沙丘、及冲刷和充填构造中。斜层理在露头上形态变化很大，原因是原始沉积物的形态不同、露头切割的角度不同等。
这些斜层理可以划分为高达4组不同特征的组合，分别代表潮流沙脊发育的不同阶段，对应于冰后期海平面上升的不同时期。
