数字交换机是针对传统模拟交换机而言的。首先我们先了解交换机的概念：用户级交换机（Private Branch Exchange），即公司内部使用的电话业务网络，系统内部分机用户分享一定数量的外线。传统的PBX利用电路交换的原理来实现集团电话的功能，而IP PBX则使用TCP/IP协议，利用包交换的原理，语音和图象等信息转化为由0和1表示的二进制的字节，在以太网上实现了相同的功能，所以IP PBX或者说基于IP协议的PBX是数字交换机。
