开式模锻是金属在不完全受限制的模膛内变形流动，模具带有一个容纳多余金属的飞边槽。模锻开始时，金属先流向模膛，当模膛阻力增加后，部分金属开始沿水平方向流向飞边槽形成飞边。随着飞边的不断减薄和该处金属温度的降低，金属向飞边槽处流动的阻力加大，迫使更多金属流人模膛。当模膛充满后，多余的金属由飞边槽处流出。
