平静呼吸（normal respiration，eupnea） 机体处于安静状态时平静而顺利的呼吸动作。吸气动作是膈肌和肋间外肌收缩引起的主动运动。吸气时，肋间外肌和膈肌收缩，胸廓前后径、左右径和上下径都增大，整个胸廓容积扩大，肺也随着扩张。肺容积增大，肺内气压下降，低于外界气压，外界空气进入肺泡。呼气时，肋间外肌和膈肌舒张，肋骨因重力作用下降，膈顶回升，胸廓容积缩小，肺借弹性回缩，肺内气压升高，迫使肺泡内部分气体排出体外。婴儿胸廓虽呈圆锥形，但各肋骨排列基本与脊柱垂直，无自后向前下的倾斜，所以无肋间外肌收缩使肋骨上举的吸气效应，婴儿平静呼吸只能靠膈肌的收缩与松弛。
