德裔英国发明家西门子(Charles Wilhelm Sie-mens， 1823—1883)和法国炼钢专家马丁 (Pierre Emile Martin，1824—1915)所发明的炼钢法，为重要的炼钢方法之一。发展于19世纪50年代，至今仍采用，虽然*电弧炉(electric-arc furnaces)日益被采用，特别是用于生产高等级钢。平炉炼钢法使用气态燃料，它通过平炉中的排气来预热。熔融的金属处于平炉底部或炉床的浅槽中。
