通过对展示空间环境的创造，采用一定的视觉传达手段和照明方式，借助一些道具设施，将某些信息和宣传内容展现在公众面前，以期对观众的心理、思想与行为产生重大的影响。为此目的所进行的创造性劳动（总体构想、平面图的绘制、版式设计、文字设计、标志设计与装饰设计、道具设计、色彩设计、照明设计、招牌设计等），就是展示设计。简言之，展示设计是使展示空间环境、道具样式、照明方式和视觉传达手段等都有利于展示展品和主题，并在心理和精神上深刻地感染观众的综合性设计行为。
