基因编码区是细胞DNA的一部分。一段DNA序列，可以编码几个mRNA，在这种mRNA上这段序列可以成为内含子，在另外一条mRNA上就有可能是一段编码序列了，而且内含子也分为功能性和非功能性的，有实验表明：切除一段基因中的内含子，这个基因不会再形成mRNA，而有的实验则得到相反的结果，内含子看似没有什么功能，其实它与基因的表达有着很大的关系，不能单纯把内含子看做无功能或者完全无用的。
