发电机逆功率保护又称功率方向保护。一般而言，发电机的功率方向应该为由发电机流向母线，但是当发电机失磁或其他某种原因，发电机有可能变为电动机运行，即从系统中吸取有功功率。这就是逆功率。当逆功率达到一定值时，发电机的保护动作，或动作于发信号或动作于跳闸。
如果一台发电机组没有运转，并且没有逆功率继电器保护，运转的机组就会驱动这个机组，这台机组上的发电机则变成电动机运行。
