原子激发态是原子除基态之外的其他可能定态。原子受到激发，能级升高而处于激发态。处于激发态的原子是不稳定的，其平均寿命是有限的，因而激发态能级有一定的宽度。原子激发态的寿命一般为1×10-8~1×10-9秒，能级宽度为1×10-7～1×10-6电子伏特。亚稳态的寿命要长得多，能级宽度则要窄得多。原子从高激发态跃迁到低激发态或基态可发射光子。
