假单胞菌属，专性需氧的革兰氏染色阴性无芽胞、有荚膜杆菌，呈杆状或略弯。菌体大小(0.5～1)×(1.5～4)微米。具端鞭毛，能运动。有些株产生荧光色素或（和） 红、蓝、黄、绿等水溶性色素，不发酵糖类。 大多数菌的适温为30℃。DNA中的G+C克分子含量为58～70%。存在于土壤、淡水、海水中。目前已确认有 29种，其中至少有3种对动物或人类致病。
