价值理论是关于社会事物之间价值关系的运动与变化规律的科学。人对于客观世界的认识分为两大类：一是关于客观世界各种事物的属性与本质及运动规律的认识；二是关于客观世界各种事物对于人类的生存与发展的意义（即价值）的认识。前者就是一般的科学理论，后者就是价值理论。价值论是人类的科学理论体系中的重要组成部分。由于“对于人类的生存与发展的意义”本身也是事物的一种特殊属性，价值理论是一种特殊的科学理论。可见，价值理论是经济理论的基础与核心。
