价值尺度是指货币表现其他一切商品是否具有价值和衡量其价值量大小的职能。这是货币最基本、最重要的职能。作为价值尺度，货币把一切商品的价值表现为同名的量，使它们在质的方面相同，在量的方面可以比较。货币之所以能执行这种职能，是因为它本身也是商品，也具有价值。当商品的价值用货币来表现的时候，商品的内在价值就异化为外在价格。价格是商品价值的货币表现，是物化在商品内的劳动的货币名称。
