人类学研究领域两大分科之一。1901年，美国考古学家W.H.霍姆斯创用这一专称，旨在研究人类的文化史，以区别于研究人类自然史的体质人类学 (physical an-thropology)。在英国称为社会人类学(social anthro-pology)。目前西方有把二者合并为社会文化人类学(so-ciocultural anthropology)的趋势。有的学者认为，社会人类学、文化人类学与民族学相当或相近。在欧洲大陆，人类学一词专指体质人类学，民族学一词指社会文化方面的研究。
