中国工程院院士，是中国工程科学技术方面的最高学术称号，为终身荣誉，于1994年6月设立。 中国工程院院士由选举产生，对年满80周岁的院士授予资深院士称号。具有很高的工程科学技术水平和在国际上享有良好声誉，对中国工程科学技术事业发展作出贡献或在促进中国工程科学技术界国际交往方面有重要作用的外国籍专家、学者，可被提名并当选为中国工程院外籍院士。 据2019年3月中国工程院官网显示，中国工程院院士共有857人，包括资深院士403人；另有外籍院士65人。已故院士213人、已故外籍院士17人。
