个体距离(individual distance)是某种动物个体允许无特别关系的同种其他个体接近的最小距离。基本上由种来决定,但可随季节和情况而改变。对人来说,可称为个人距离(personaldistance),一般约近1米。交尾、育儿、格斗时个体距离等于0,在除此以外的情况下保持个体距离的动物,称为非接触性动物(non-contact animals),大部分动物属于这类动物。相反地,个体距离几乎经常等于0,与同种其他个体相互接触的动物(海象、河马等)称为接触性动物。
