西方现代戏剧流派之一。作为一个流派，它首先兴起于诗歌。法国诗人波德莱尔（1821～1867）是象征主义诗歌的先驱。莫雷亚斯于1886年在《费加罗报》上发表了一篇“文学宣言”，将这派诗人称之为“象征主义者”。后来一般都以此作为象征主义诞生的标志。很快，这个流派从诗歌扩展到戏剧，并成为一个波及欧洲数国的戏剧流派。比利时诗人M.梅特林克于1886年去巴黎参加象征主义运动，并于1889年发表剧本《玛兰纳公主》，被公认为是第一个象征主义剧作家。
