格调说由清康乾年间的沈德潜所倡导。“格调”渊于严羽，主张思想感情是形式格调的决定因素。主张创作有益于温柔敦厚“诗教”，有补于世道人心的“中正和平”的作品，故而归之于有法可循、以唐音为准的“格调”。因此其诗论具有维护封建统治的色彩，有一定保守性。而其创作多为歌咏升平、应制唱和之类。但另一方面他也提倡“蕴蓄”、“理趣”、诗的化工境界及重视作品主导作用等具有审美理论价值的有益观点。
