官署名巡检司，官名巡检使，省称巡检。始于五代后唐庄宗。宋 时于京师府界东西两路，各置都同巡检二人，京城四门巡检各一人。又于沿边、沿江、沿海置巡检司。掌训练甲兵，巡逻州邑，职权颇重，后受所在县令节制。明清时，凡镇市、关隘要害处俱设巡检司巡检为主官正九品，归县令管辖。参阅《文献通考·职官十三》、 清 顾炎武 《日知录·乡亭之职》。
