The Chaldeans are Eastern-rite Catholics - autonomous Churches of Eastern origin which retain their own liturgy and traditions, but recognise the Pope's authority.
Nationalists hope that the planned visit this summer of the pope, who is the spiritual leader for the 5m-odd Ukrainian Catholics (including 4m eastern-rite Uniates, also called Greek Catholics), will boost their cause.
