【Abstract】 The function of compulsory norms is becoming on the increase, as the area of private international law is widening. The theory of "directly applicable norms" is one of the most typical theories in research of compulsory norms now. It is of significance to study the theory of "directly applicable norms".The article starts with the summary of the theory of "directly applicable norms". It discusses the connotation, the formation and the development of the theory in chapter one. It compares "directly applicable norms" with other related matters by comparison in chapter two. In the third chapter it discusses the theory, legislation and judicial practice of "directly applicable norms" in main European countries, by the means of connecting the theory with practice. In chapter four it introduces the situation in China and provides the suggestions and the problems which need be paid attention to, referring to our country.In conclusion,what's more, it points out the significance of "directly applicable norms" in politics, economy and society.
