The gamut of possible outcomes runs from a mild go-forth-and-sin-no-more to the truly Draconian stuff: forcing Microsoft to share its Windows source code with its competitors or carving it up into separate, independent companies, the so-called Baby Bills (see chart).
The independent self-regulatory body the Press Complaints Commission which was established in 1991 to enforce a code of practice for UK newspaper and magazine publishers and editors has been severely criticised for its handling of the phone-hacking issue.
